WELCOME

SONG

Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided,
urged and inspired us, cheered us in our way,
sought us and saved us, pardoned and provided:
Lord of the years, we bring our thanks today.

Lord, for that word, the word of life which fires us,
speaks to our hearts and sets our souls ablaze,
teaches and trains, rebukes us and inspires us:
Lord of the word, receive your people’s praise.

Lord, for our land in this our generation,
spirits oppressed by pleasure, wealth and care:
for young and old, for commonwealth and nation,
Lord of our land, be pleased to hear our prayer.

Lord, for our world
where men disown and doubt you,
loveless in strength, and comfortless in pain,
hungry and helpless, lost indeed without you;
Lord of the world, we pray that Christ may reign.

Lord, for ourselves, in living power remake us
self on the cross and Christ upon the throne,
past put behind us, for the future take us;
Lord of our lives, to live for Christ alone.

SONGS

Come you weary heart now to Jesus
Come you anxious soul now and see
There is perfect love and comfort in your tears
Rest here in His wondrous peace.

Come find what this world cannot offer
Come and find your joy here complete.
Taste the living water, never thirst again
Rest here in His wondrous peace.

Oh the goodness, the goodness of Jesus
Satisfied he is all that I need.
May it be, come what may,
That I rest all my days in the goodness of Jesus.

Come and find your hope now in Jesus
He is all He said He would be.
Grace is overflowing from the Saviour’s heart
Rest here in His wondrous peace.

Here is love, vast as the ocean
loving kindness as the flood.
When the prince of life, our ransom,
shed for us his precious blood.
Who his love will not remember?
Who can cease to sing his praise?
He can never be forgotten,
throughout heaven’s eternal days.

On the mount of crucifixion
fountains opened deep and wide;
through the floodgates of God’s mercy
flowed a vast and gracious tide.
Grace and love, like mighty rivers,
poured incessant from above,
and heaven’s peace and perfect justice
kissed a guilty world in love.

In your truth you do direct me,
by your Spirit through your Word;
and your grace my need is meeting,
as I trust in you, my Lord.
Onto me, though undeserving,
your great love forever pours
without measure, full and boundless,
drawing out my heart to yours.

Let me, all your love accepting,
love you ever all my days.
Let me seek your kingdom only
and my life be to your praise.
You alone shall be my glory,
nothing in the world I see.
You have cleansed and sanctified me.
You yourself have set me free.

PRAYERS

SONG

What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy, my righteousness, and freedom
My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace

To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to His
Oh how strange and divine, I can sing: all is mine!
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

The night is dark but I am not forsake
For by my side, the Saviour He will stay
I labour on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need, His power is displayed

To this I hold, my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley He will lead
Oh the night has been won, and I shall overcome!
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

No fate I dread, I know I am forgiven
The future sure, the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And He was raised to overthrow the grave

To this I hold, my sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh the chains are released, I can sing: I am free!
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

With every breath I long to follow Jesus
For He has said that He will bring me home
nd day by day I know He will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne

To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to Him
When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I, but through Christ in me!

BIBLE READING
2 Peter 3:1-18

This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Saviour through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgement and destruction of the ungodly.

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfil his promise as some count slowness, but is patient towards you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! 13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. 15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, 16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability. 18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

BIBLE TALK

SONG

Amazing grace how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!

Through every danger, trial and snare
I have already come;
his grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,
his word my hope secures.
My shield and stronghold he shall be
as long as life endures.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years
bright shining as the sun,
we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
than when we first begun.

SONG

Lift high the name of Jesus
of Jesus our King.
Make known the power of His grace,
the beauty of His peace.
Remember how His mercy reached
and we cried out to Him.
He lifted us to solid ground,
to freedom from our sin.

Oh sing my soul,
and tell all He’s done,
till the earth and heavens are filled with His glory!

Lift high the name of Jesus,
of Jesus our Lord.
His power in us is greater than,
is greater than this world.
To share the reason for our hope,
to serve with love and grace,
that all who see Him shine through us
might bring the Father praise.

Lift high the name of Jesus,
of Jesus our Light.
No other name on earth can save,
can raise a soul to life.
He opens up our eyes to see
the harvest He has grown.
We labour in His fields of grace
as He leads sinners home.

WELCOME  by Richard Hopkins

SONG

I stand amazed in the presence
of Jesus the Nazarene,
and wonder how he could love me,
a sinner, condemned, unclean.

How marvellous! How wonderful!
And my song shall ever be:
How marvellous! How wonderful
is my Saviour’s love for me!

For me it was in the garden
he prayed, ‘Not my will, but thine.’
He had no tears for his own griefs
but sweat drops of blood for mine.

In pity angels beheld him
and came from the world of light,
to comfort him in the sorrows
he bore for my soul that night.

He took my sins and my sorrows,
he made them his very own;
he bore the burden of Calvary,
and suffered and died alone.

When with the ransomed in glory
his face I at last shall see,
’twill be my joy through the ages
to sing of his love for me.

SONG

There is no other name
In heaven can be found
Through whom we are redeemed
Through whom your grace abounds
No other name can save
But Jesus Christ our Lord

My joy in sorrowʼs tears
My strength to cast out fears
No other name but Jesus, Jesus
My hope in darkest night
My broken soulʼs delight
No other name but Jesus, Jesus

There is no victory
But Jesus crucified
No other cure for sin
But that our Saviour died
No other hope we have
But that he rose again

No other throne endures
No other song remains
But ʻWorthy is the Lamb
Who was for sinners slainʼ
When every knee shall bow
And tongue confess you are Lord,
You are Lord

BIBLE READING read by Ruth Bryant

12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

16 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? 18 And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? 20 So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it. 22 And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.

23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24 You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.

CONFESSION

As we come to the Lord’s table we confess our great need of the death of Jesus which this bread and wine signify.
Our heavenly Father
thank you that you love us
and care for us all the time.
We know that this week
we have not always lived the way you tell us.
We have done wrong things
and not done
all the good things we should have done.
We are only saved
because of what you have done for us.
So because of Jesus, please forgive us
and help us to live as your friends.
We ask this in his name. Amen.
Thank you, loving Lord God,
that even though we were dead in all our sins,
you made us alive because of the great love with which you love us. We thank you in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

SONG

Consider Christ the source of our salvation,
that he should take the penalty for me.
Though he was pure, a lamb without a blemish,
he took my sins and nailed them to the tree.

My Lord and God, you are so rich in mercy,
mere words alone are not sufficient thanks.
So take my life, transform, renew and change me
that I might be a living sacrifice.

Consider Christ, that he could trust his Father
in the garden of Gethsemane.
Though full of dread and fearful of the anguish,
he drank the cup that was reserved for me.

Consider Christ, for death he has defeated,
and he arose, appeared for all to see.
And now he sits at God’s right hand in heaven
where he prepares a resting place for me.

THE LORD’S SUPPER

We praise and thank you, heavenly Father,
for our Saviour Jesus Christ,
that he came at just the right time,
while we were still weak,
and died for the ungodly.

Thank you that his death in our place
while we were still sinners
shows your love for us.
Thank you that his death
has dealt with all our guilt and sin.

We remember that death for us as we take bread,
just as he did on the night he was betrayed;
we give thanks, and share it together,
remembering that Jesus said:
‘This is my body broken for you’.

We remember Jesus as we eat this bread.

In the same way, we take this wine, and drink it,
remembering that Jesus said:
‘This cup poured out for you
is the new covenant in my blood.’

We remember Jesus as we drink this wine.

We eat and drink remembering with gratitude that Christ died for us. And by doing so we proclaim his death until he comes.

Amen. Come Lord Jesus.

SONG
I cast my mind to Calvary
Where Jesus bled and died for me.
I see His wounds, His hands, His feet.

My Saviour on that cursed tree
His body bound and drenched in tears
They laid Him down in Joseph’s tomb.
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise His name forever more
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

Then on the third at break of dawn,
The Son of heaven rose again.
O trampled death where is your sting?
The angels roar for Christ the King

O praise the name of the Lord our God…

He shall return in robes of white,
The blazing Son shall pierce the night.
And I will rise among the saints,
My gaze transfixed on Jesus’ face

O praise the name of the Lord our God…

SONG

Holy holy holy, Lord God almighty
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty.
God in three persons, blesséd Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns
around the glassy sea.
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who was and is and evermore shall be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see.
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee.
Perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name,
in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty.
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

SONGS

Come and stand before your maker
Full of wonder, full of fear;
Come behold his power and glory
Yet with confidence draw near,
For the one who holds the heavens
And commands the stars above
Is the God who bends to bless us
With an unrelenting love.

Rejoice!
Come and lift your hands and raise your voice;
He is worthy of all praise, Rejoice!
Sing the mercies of your King
And with trembling, rejoice.

We are children of the promise,
The beloved of the Lord.
Won with everlasting kindness,
Bought with sacrificial blood.
Bringing reconciliation
To a world that longs to know
The affections of a father
Who will never let them go.

All our sickness, all our sorrows
Jesus carried up the hill.
He has walked this path before us,
He is walking with us still;
Turning tragedy to triumph,
Turning agony to praise,
There is blessing in the battle
So take heart and stand amazed.

The splendour of the King clothed in majesty;
let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice.
He wraps Himself in light and darkness tries to hide
and trembles at His voice, and trembles at His voice.

How great is our God!
Sing with me – how great is our God!
And all will see how great, how great is our God!

And age to age He stands and time is in His hands;
Beginning and the End, Beginning and the End.
The Godhead, three in one; Father, Spirit, Son.
The Lion and the Lamb, the Lion and the Lamb.

Name above all names! Worthy of all praise!
My heart will sing: how great is our God!

SONG

Strength will rise
as we wait upon the Lord,
we will wait upon the Lord,
we will wait upon the Lord. (repeat)

Our God, you reign forever.
Our hope, our strong deliverer.

You are the everlasting God,
the everlasting God.
You do not faint, you won’t grow weary.
You’re the defender of the weak,
you comfort those in need,
you lift us up on wings like eagles.

BIBLE READING read by Becca Milsom

1 Kings 18:1-40

18 After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.” 2 So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly, 4 and when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.” 6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.

7 And as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. And Obadiah recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?” 8 And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’” 9 And he said, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? 10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, ‘He is not here’, he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you. 11 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’ 12 And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth. 13 Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid a hundred men of the Lord’s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.” 15 And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.” 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?” 18 And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals. 19 Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

20 So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word. 22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men. 23 Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it. 24 And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.” 25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it.” 26 And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped round the altar that they had made. 27 And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” 28 And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. 29 And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name”, 32 and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.” 34 And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time. 35 And the water ran round the altar and filled the trench also with water.

36 And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. 37 Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.” 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God.” 40 And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.

BIBLE TALK by Richard Hopkins

CONFESSION

Our loving heavenly father,
you have made great promises to us.
But in our everyday lives,
we often forget about them.
Lord, please forgive us
and help us to trust you.

You have promised to provide for us,
but we still worry,
as if you had made no promises at all.
Lord, please forgive us
and help us to trust you.

You have told us to worship you alone
But in our lives we turn to other gods
Which are really no gods at all.
Lord, please forgive us
and help us to trust you.

You have promised that to follow you
is the best way to live.
But we go our own way instead.
Lord, please forgive us
and help us to trust you.

You have promised us a home forever with you
and yet we tend to live as if this world
is where we belong.
Lord, please forgive us
and help us to trust you.

Thank you that you sent the Lord Jesus Christ
to die for all our sins and rise again
to bring us new life.
You promise that all who believe in him
will be forgiven and welcomed home.
Thank you Father,
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Do you believe and trust in God the Father,
source of all being and life,
the one for whom we exist?
We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Son,
who took our human nature,
died for us and rose again?
We believe and trust in him.

Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit,
who gives life to the people of God
and makes Christ known in the world?
We believe and trust in him.

This is the faith of the Church.
This is our faith.
We believe and trust in one God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen.

SONG

In Christ alone my hope is found,
he is my light, my strength, my song;
this cornerstone, this solid ground,
firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
when fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all.
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone who took on flesh,
fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
scorned by the ones he came to save:
till on that cross as Jesus died,
the wrath of God was satisfied –
for every sin on him was laid;
here in the death of Christ I live.

There in the ground his body lay,
light of the world by darkness slain:
then bursting forth in glorious day
up from the grave He rose again!
And as he stands in victory
sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
for I am His and he is mine –
bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
this is the power of Christ in me;
from life’s first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
can ever pluck me from his hand;
till He returns or calls me home

WELCOME

SONG

Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven;
To His feet your tribute bring.
Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
Evermore His praises sing:
Praise Him, praise Him!
Praise the everlasting King.

Praise Him for His grace and favour
To our fathers in distress;
Praise Him still the same forever,
Slow to chide, and swift to bless.
Praise Him, praise Him!
Glorious in His faithfulness.

Father like He tends and spares us,
Well our feeble frame He knows;
In His hands He gently bears us,
Rescues us from all our foes.
Praise Him, praise Him!
Widely as His mercy flows.

Angels, help us to adore Him,
You behold Him face to face;
Sun and moon, bow down before Him;
Dwellers all in time and space,
Praise Him, praise Him!
Praise with us the God of grace.

BIBLE READING
Joel 2:18-2:32

18 Then the Lord became jealous for his land
and had pity on his people.
19 The Lord answered and said to his people,
“Behold, I am sending to you
grain, wine, and oil,
and you will be satisfied;
and I will no more make you
a reproach among the nations.
20 “I will remove the northerner far from you,
and drive him into a parched and desolate land,
his vanguard into the eastern sea,
and his rearguard into the western sea;
the stench and foul smell of him will rise,
for he has done great things.
21 “Fear not, O land;
be glad and rejoice,
for the Lord has done great things!
22 Fear not, you beasts of the field,
for the pastures of the wilderness are green;
the tree bears its fruit;
the fig tree and vine give their full yield.
23 “Be glad, O children of Zion,
and rejoice in the Lord your God,
for he has given the early rain for your vindication;
he has poured down for you abundant rain,
the early and the latter rain, as before.
24 “The threshing floors shall be full of grain;
the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 I will restore to you the years
that the swarming locust has eaten,
the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,
my great army, which I sent among you.
26 “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,
and praise the name of the Lord your God,
who has dealt wondrously with you.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.
27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,
and that I am the Lord your God and there is none else.
And my people shall never again be put to shame.

28 “And it shall come to pass afterwards,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh;
your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
your old men shall dream dreams,
and your young men shall see visions.
29 Even on the male and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit.

30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

SONG

As the heavens are higher than the earth
so his ways are higher than the ways of this world,
and his thoughts run deeper than the mind of man;
Father, break into our darkened hearts.

Come and drink the river of his Word
if you thirst for water that can satisfy;
come and join the banquet at the Master’s feast
where his love and faithfulness provide.

I will trust in you as you speak to me,
I will turn to you as you call my name,
as the rain gives life on this arid ground,
so your Word will bring your children home.

Come and listen to his gentle voice
for the words he speaks to us are Spirit and life;
come and seek your Saviour while he may be found,
sure that Jesus’ words can never lie.

BIBLE TALK                       by Paul Jenkins

God restores us through judgment

God is with us forever

CONFESSION
As we come to the Lord’s table we confess our great need of the death of Jesus which this bread and wine signify.

Heavenly Father.
we praise you for adopting us as your children
and making us heirs of eternal life
in your Son Jesus Christ,
who has freed us from our sins
by his blood.
We know that we still fail to love you
with all our heart,
We know that we still fail to serve you as we ought.
We know we need the death of Jesus for us.

Thank you that in him you pardon our offences
and make us clean. May we continue
as members of Christ,
in whom alone is salvation. Amen.

The Lord Jesus told us to eat and drink this supper to proclaim his death until he comes again.

Heavenly Father, it is our privilege to remind one another that you gave your only Son to die on the cross for our redemption. By his death, as the one perfect sacrifice, Jesus Christ has offered all that was needed to take away the sins of the world. By rising to life, he has assured us of our resurrection to eternal life. By ascending to your right hand in heaven, he has poured out your promised Holy Spirit, equipping us to serve you.

How wonderful you are, our God and Saviour! How rich in mercy! How great the love with which you loved us! You have blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing!

Therefore with your whole creation,
and with all your people since time began,
and with all the thousands upon thousands gathered now around your heavenly throne,
we honour and glorify you, saying together:

To him who sits on the throne,
and to the Lamb,
be blessing and honour
and glory and might
for ever and ever. Amen

SONG

You chose the cross with every breath,
the perfect life, the perfect death:
you chose the cross.
A crown of thorns you wore for us,
and crowned us with eternal life:
you chose the cross.
And though your soul was overwhelmed with pain,
obedient to death you overcame.

I’m lost in wonder, I’m lost in love,
I’m lost in praise forevermore.
Because of Jesus’ unfailing love,
I am forgiven, I am restored.

You loosed the cords of sinfulness
and broke the chains of my disgrace:
you chose the cross.
Up from the grave victorious
you rose again so glorious:
you chose the cross.
The sorrow that surrounded you was mine.
‘Yet not my will but yours be done’, you cried.

On the night he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way he took the cup, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

We share communion by passing the bread and wine along the rows; you might like to say to your neighbour:
Remember Jesus as you eat this bread
Remember Jesus as you drink this wine.

You’ll be brought a container with a bread wafer and grape juice. If you would like to be brought a gluten-free wafer, please tell the steward.
As the bread and wine are distributed, we sing of Jesus’ death for us

SONG

All glory to the King of ages,
All glory to the King of kings.
His name is love, His name is Jesus,
Enthroned above in majesty.

Into this world You came to save us,
You bore the cross, You took my sin
You shone Your light into my darkness
Unveiled the truth, this mystery.

You are my God, You are my Saviour
You are the Rock on which I stand.

Ever faithful God, I cling to You,
In every way You’ve shown that You are good.
There’s no other love compares with You,
Forever strong, forever true,
Ever faithful God, I cling to You.

You are the end of all my searching,
You pour Your grace on all my need.
Unfailing love, unending mercy
Are found in You, the Prince of Peace.

You are my God, You are my Saviour
Eternal One, the Great I Am.

SONG

You’re the word of God the Father
from before the world began;
every star and every planet
has been fashioned by Your hand.

All creation holds together
by the power of Your voice:
let the skies declare Your glory,
let the land and seas rejoice!

You’re the Author of creation,
you’re the Lord of every man;
and Your cry of love rings out
across the lands.

Yet You left the gaze of angels,
came to seek and save the lost,
and exchanged the joy of heaven
for the anguish of a cross.

With a prayer You fed the hungry,
with a word You stilled the sea;
yet how silently You suffered
that the guilty may go free.

You’re the Author of creation…

With a shout You rose victorious,
wresting victory from the grave,
and ascended into heaven
leading captives in Your wake.

Now You stand before the Father
interceding for Your own.
From each tribe and tongue and nation
you are leading sinners home.

You’re the Author of creation…

WELCOME  by Ed Bowerman

SONG

Holy holy holy, Lord God almighty
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty.
God in three persons, blesséd Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns
around the glassy sea.
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who was and is and evermore shall be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see.
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee.
Perfect in power, in love and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name,
in earth and sky and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty.
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

PRAYERS                 led by Tom and Esther Coekin

Our children and young people go out to their groups

SONG

Speak, O Lord, as we come to you
to receive the food of your holy Word.
Take your truth, plant it deep in us;
shape and fashion us in your likeness,
that the light of Christ might be seen today
in our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
Speak, O Lord, and fulfil in us
all your purposes for your glory.

Teach us, Lord, full obedience,
holy reverence, true humility;
test our thoughts and our attitudes
in the radiance of your purity.
Cause our faith to rise; cause our eyes to see
your majestic love and authority.
Words of pow’r that can never fail –
let their truth prevail over unbelief.

Speak, O Lord, and renew our minds;
help us grasp the heights of your plans for us.
Truths unchanged from the dawn of time
that will echo down through eternity.
And by grace we’ll stand on your promises,
and by faith we’ll walk as you walk with us.
Speak, O Lord, till your church is built
and the earth is filled with your glory.

BIBLE READING

1 Corinthians 5                  read by Jilly Tan

5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. 2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgement on the one who did such a thing. 4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13 God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

BIBLE TALK                       by Richard Hopkins

  • Persistent sin really matters
  • The church’s purity really matters

CONFESSION

Heavenly Father,
you have loved us with an everlasting love
but we have gone our own way
and broken your laws.
We are sorry for our sins,
we mourn for them
and turn away from them.
For the sake of your Son who died for us,
forgive us, cleanse us and change us.
By your Holy Spirit,
may we hunger and thirst for righteousness
and may he enable us to live for you,
and to be salt and light in your world;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SONG

Only by grace can we enter,
only by grace can we stand;
not by our human endeavour,
but by the blood of the Lamb.

Into your presence you call us,
you call us to come.
Into your presence you draw us,
and now by your grace we come,
now by your grace we come.

Lord, if you mark our transgressions
who could stand?
Thanks to your grace
we are cleansed by the blood of the lamb. (repeat).

As we come to the Lord’s table, we remind ourselves of all that Christ has done for us in his death and resurrection.

Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us,
so let us celebrate the feast,
not with the old leaven
of corruption and wickedness,
but with the unleavened bread
of sincerity and truth.

Christ once raised from the dead dies no more;
death has no more dominion over him.
In dying, he died to sin once for all;
In living, he lives to God.

See yourselves therefore as dead to sin
and alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Christ has been raised from the dead;
the firstfruits of those who sleep.

For as by one man came death,
by another has come also
the resurrection of the dead.
For as in Adam all die,
even so in Christ shall all be made alive
.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and shall be for ever. Amen.

You’ll be brought a container with a bread wafer and grape juice. If you would like to be brought a gluten-free wafer, please tell the steward. As the bread and wine are distributed, we sing of Jesus’ death for us.

SONG

I will glory in my redeemer
whose priceless blood has ransomed me.
Mine was the sin that drove the bitter nails
and hung him on that judgment tree.
I will glory in my Redeemer
who crushed the power of sin and death;
my only Saviour before the holy Judge,
the Lamb who is my righteousness,
the Lamb who is my righteousness.

I will glory in my Redeemer:
my life he bought, my love he owns.
I have no longings for another,
I’m satisfied in Him alone.
I will glory in my Redeemer:
his faithfulness my standing place.
Though foes are mighty and rush upon me,
my feet are firm, held by his grace,
my feet are firm, held by his grace.

I will glory in my Redeemer
who carries me on eagle’s wings.
He crowns my life with loving kindness,
his triumph song I’ll ever sing.
I will glory in my Redeemer
who waits for me at gates of gold.
And when He calls me, it will be paradise
his face forever to behold,
his face forever to behold.

SONG

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong, a perfect plea:
a great High Priest, whose name is Love,
who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on his hands,
my name is written on his heart;
I know that while in heaven he stands
no tongue can bid me thence depart,
no tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tempts me to despair
and tells me of the guilt within,
upward I look and see him there
who made an end of all my sin.
Because the sinless Saviour died,
my sinful soul is counted free;
for God, the Just, is satisfied
to look on him and pardon me,
to look on him and pardon me.

Behold him there, the risen Lamb;
my perfect, spotless righteousness,
the great unchangeable I AM,
the King of glory and of grace!
One with himself, I cannot die;
my soul is purchased with his blood;
my life is hid with Christ on high,
with Christ, my Saviour and my God,
with Christ, my Saviour and my God.
